Campaigners fight against unlicensed dog breeding in Wales

25 February 2020

The Welsh Assembly has heard calls to end unlicensed puppy farming in the nation.

The Care and Respect Including All Dogs campaign (C.A.R.I.A.D) have made a petition calling for the end of unlicensed puppy farming.

It calls for a ban on new dog breeding licenses, renewals and applications until the regulations are improved.

Lesley Griffiths AM, Minister for the Environment, said “any changes to the legislation or enforcement must be proportionate and evidence based.”

The campaign say a key issue is a limited inspection process.

They are adamant that the Government have been too slow to respond, and the evidence that there’s an issue with dog breeding is “indisputable”.

In the petition, C.A.R.I.A.D claim they have been “providing evidence on for years to both the Welsh Government and councils and which has summarily been ignored or dismissed.”

Founder of Friends of Animals Wales, Eileen Jones, is part of the campaign because “puppies are sold to the public that are sick and sometimes people don’t realise until they’ve formed an emotional attachment”.

The Welsh Government’s petitions committee said the Environment minister will make a statement about this soon and they have postponed debate until this has been made.
