Fire Service welcomes petition to ban sale of fireworks

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service says it supports an online petition to ban the sale of fireworks and for them to only be used in organised public displays.

Nearly 130,000 people have signed a UK wide petition which aims to ban the private use of fireworks.

Head of Fire Crime, Home Safety and Fire Setting Intervention at South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, Matthew Jones, has welcomed the petition.

“Organised displays… [are] actually safe, they’ve been risk assessed [and] the fireworks have been purchased from a reputable retailer. The issues with purchasing fireworks illegally, from the boot of a car, from a friend in the pub, no one knows where those fireworks have come from and they haven’t been tested.”

The Fire Service are also encouraging people to attend organised events because of bonfires. They say bonfires getting out of control were the cause of many incidents on Bonfire Night with around 580 calls made to the Fire Service between 4pm and midnight.

Mr Jones says South Wales Fire and Rescue Service will  use social media and TV and radio stations more next year to raise awareness about bonfire night safety.
