Residents unhappy with Mardy Bridge work disruption

9 March 2018

Residents in Rumney are unhappy at the disruption caused by the closure of a railway bridge.

Mardy Road Bridge is being upgraded in work to upgrade the railway that runs above it.

The bridge was closed to road traffic in March last year, and will remain closed until autumn 2018.

But some locals say that the disruption has lead to congestion, pot holes and longer commutes.

Jodie Rauch lives in St Mellons and works in Pengam Green. The old bridge was part of her route to drop her son off at school, before going to work.

She says the closure of the bridge has almost tripled her commuting time in the morning.

“Before the bridge closed, I would drop my son off to school for 8.45am, then make my way to work for a 9.00am start.

“Now, to make work for 9.00am, I have to leave the house much earlier, drop my son at breakfast club for 8.20am, then sit in stop-start traffic.”

She says she now has to travel an extra seven miles to work, costing her an extra 250 hours and 2000 miles a year.

Mardy Road Bridge had to be demolished and rebuilt in a higher position by Network Rail, in their work to electrify the South Wales Mainline railway that runs above it.

In a statement Network Rail said:  “The reconstruction of Mardy Road Bridge is part of the electrification of the South Wales Mainline railway. A major construction programme is underway to transform the mainline into Cardiff to prepare it for the overhead posts and wires that will power the new electric trains.

“This work requires a full road closure, which from 18th March 2017 until Autumn 2018. Diversions are in place to re-direct traffic.”
