Roath residents want a long-term plan for tackling rubbish

7 November 2016

Volunteers from the community litter-picking group Keep Roath Tidy say Cardiff City Council needs to change its approach to waste management if it’s going to solve the area’s rubbish problem.

The group’s comments follow the Council’s deep clean blitz of Plasnewydd last Friday as part of its Love Where You Live campaign.

Jennifer Jones, Chair of Keep Roath Tidy, says the campaign is a good starting point, but the Council needs to do more to solve the underlying issues behind the high level of litter.

She says Roath has a big population, which creates a lot of waste, and has a large number of students who possibly don’t understand the City’s bin collection rules.

‘We’d like the Council to become more efficient and effective with enforcement and education.’

She also highlights problems with the structure of the Council’s waste management department and suggests it should work together instead of dividing up responsibilities such as street cleaning, collection and enforcement.

She’s concerned community groups like Keep Roath Tidy will ‘fizzle out’ unless the area sees real change from the Council in the way it delivers its services.

The Love Where You Live campaign will see the Council deep cleaning wards, reminding residents of littering fines, raising recycling awareness and thanking cleaning and litter groups across the City until the 12th December.

Cardiff City Council has so far been unavailable for comment.
