School traffic concern for Llanedeyrn parents

13 February 2018

Parents of children who attend Llanedeyrn Primary School are worried about their children’s safety due to heavy traffic outside the school.

The school is located on Llanedeyrn Drive, a busy main road, near ongoing construction work at the nearby Maelfa shopping centre.

Parents at the school are concerned it is only a matter of time until an accident happens.

Becky Noice, 27 from Pentwyn, has two children who attend the school, and she drives them in each morning. “They should put more car park space. Take some of the grass away, a lot of greenery that isn’t needed,” Ms Noice said. “Knowing my daughter, there is no way I could get her to school on time if she walked”.

Another parent, Kayleigh Wheddon, 31, shared similar concerns. “We park a couple of streets away and we walk into the school, just because the traffic congestion is so bad,” Ms Wheddon said.

Llanedeyrn primary school missed out on council funding last year to ease traffic congestion on the school run. All Saints Primary school and St Phillip Evans Primary school in Llandeyrn received funding, but Lib Dem Councillor for Pentwyn and Llanedeyrn, Emma Sandrey, says a shortage of council money meant Llanedeyrn Primary school was left out.

She said: ” We were told that all three primary schools in the area were going to receive similar traffic measures. I think it is disgusting. The school was promised money and for the council to say they ran out of money, implies there was little accountability.

“Quite often tempers fray outside the school and people get quite impatient, especially if parents can’t find somewhere to park their car and drop off their children,” she said.

Cllr Emma Sandrey said more needs to be done to look at how children in Llanedeyrn and Pentwyn are getting to school. She says those children who live locally should get the bus, cycle, and walk wherever possible.

She said grass round the school is being turfed, with cars parking on the curbs when dropping of their children. “It is making the area look unsightly.”

Cardiff Council need to put in traffic calming measures, but also traffic enforcement, where parents are fined for parking illegally. She says no point getting rid of all the grassy areas and creating new parks as that isn’t resolving the issue at all. The issue is how people are getting children to school, and how far they are travelling and how we make that sustainable long term.

CJS news have approached Cardiff Council for comment, but yet to receive a response.
