Rhone: A challenging unpaved cycle route for aspiring snow cyclists …
Snow cycling. This sport would undoubtedly bring out the adventurer in you. Pedalling the 2,458 metres Col du Jandri will be worth the panting when you reach the top and find breath taking views from glacier Mont de Lans. Considered one of the most difficult ascents for cyclists, this cycle from Les Clapiers in the Rhone-Alpes will certainly test your talent.
This unpaved snowy road is the second highest in Europe and leads you along the same route as many of Les Deux Alpes’ ski lift lines. You can ride along the uninhabited roads and glimpse over the frozen lakes. The elation of riding in tougher conditions will make you feel like a true explorer.
Most snow cyclists say that balance isn’t hard – just whack on your studded tyres, preferably wide mountain bike ones, and let some air out to make them softer on the snow. Remember to avoid frostbite with thermal gloves, and we recommend a face mask helmet to avoid blue lips and windburn. Keeping your weight back will assist you in slippery conditions. Although its an adrenaline rush, stay calm and release your grip slightly – we don’t want tension, we want enjoyment!
Remember, snow cycling isn’t only a sight for sore eyes but a hero for your body’s muscles. Exercising at higher altitude increases the rate of red blood cells produces, thus bringing more oxygen to the muscles. Extra oxygen in the muscles is great for anyone, and you’ll return downhill feeling refuelled and refreshed.
The region of Rhone also boasts plenty of planes for you to set up camp with a host of rivers and valleys to explore. And if you’re still feeling adventurous, bear the cold and head down to Ardeche river in the southwest of the region where you’ll see the biggest gorge in Europe.
