For many shoppers these days, paying for plastic bags is a regular part of their weekly shop.

But where does the money go? Waitrose has at least one of the answers.

And the grant goes to…

The supermarket chain, in collaboration with Hubbub, has recently unveiled a £1m grant to invest in UK-based projects that are looking to reduce plastic waste in innovative ways.

Plan Plastic: The Million Pound Challenge may sound like a new game show title. However, the premise is far more exciting.

The ‘challenge’ has set out to invest between £150,000 and £300,000 in each chosen project in order to help them make a lasting change for future generations.

Making a real impact

Waitrose is also particularly interested in projects that aim to make a social impact, as well as others raising awareness of plastic and its use for younger generations.

“We will be on the lookout for entries that really demonstrate a tangible impact and that will have a longer-term legacy beyond the grant funding stage,” said CEO and founder of Hubbub, Trewin Rosterick, in a recent statement to the Evening Standard.

The kind of projects that the scheme will look to invest in range from more in-depth recycling projects to schemes aimed at both the reuse or even total reduction of plastic materials used in everyday life.
