Why we’re supporting Greenpeace’s packaging campaign

The charity is calling for supermarkets to ditch their plastic packaging

Here at Canvas and Glass, we feel it’s important to take action.

This can come in multiple forms. Whether it’s doing your bit by ditching the meal deals for a plastic-free homemade meal or taking part in your local beach cleanup, there’s multiple ways you can get involved.

But sometimes, we think that bigger actions needs to happen. And now there’s something you can do about it.

Greenpeace, one of the world’s biggest environmental charities, has set up a campaign calling for supermarkets to ditch throwaway plastic-packaging.

So far the petition has 901,710 signatures, but the organisation is looking to get 2m to sign up to the campaign, which you can sign here.

Why support it?

A report released in November by the Environmental Investigation Agency and Greenpeace UK estimated that Britain’s top ten biggest supermarkets alone are using in excess of 810,000 tonnes of plastic each year. This equates to 810,000,000 kilograms of plastic every year.

Greenpeace say: “Our oceans can’t stomach any more plastic. From turtles entangled in six pack rings, to whales with stomachs full of plastic bags, the effects of plastic pollution can be devastating.

“By ditching plastic packaging, supermarkets have the power to lead the way in dramatically reducing the amount of single use plastic produced.”

What else can you do?

So you’ve signed the petition, now what else can you do?

Last year, shoppers at a Keynsham Tesco staged a ‘plastic protest’ by leaving their plastic wrapping from their shopping at the tills.

You could do this, or you could overhaul your shopping habits to protest instead. The less plastic that’s bought will send a message to supermarkets that we have had enough.

If possible, always buy loose fruit and veg. Buying from local markets can also be cheaper than shopping at supermarkets, and there can be more plastic-free alternatives.

You can also help spread the message by taking a photo of yourself with an plastic-free alternatives with our hashtag #weareplasticfree.

You can sign the petition here. Join the movement.
