It may seem like London is full of plastic, but there are loads of ways you can take action against plastic in the capital
There are community groups and initiatives scattered all over London, so whether you live in the green streets of Chiswick or the bustling Square Mile we’ve got a campaign for you.
Mingle with like minded activists
If you’re based in South London, Plastic-free Brixton run regular meetings, motivational talks and fun social events for plastic-free activists. The community group has a Facebook page where they share tips, ideas and plan eco-friendly events. You can even find volunteering opportunities for charities, local businesses and even zero-waste shops through the group.
Make a stand with your weekly shop
Head to Thornton’s Budgens to shop in the special plastic-free zones of the supermarket. The Belsize Park store has removed plastic for 1,800 of its items in a bid to make ethical shopping easier for its customers. Working with A Plastic Planet c
Clean up the canals
Hackney is out in full force cleaning up its local canals. If you enjoy a cold beer by the side of one of Hackney’s rivers then join up with Plastic Free Hackney to help keep them clean. The group runs regular litter picks, river cleans and tree planting events in the local community.
Go plastic-free at work
If you’re a city slicker working in central London, get involved with the Plastic Free City campaign. Sign the pledge and commit to reducing the single use plastics found in most takeaway lunches, coffees and office materials. The campaign also works with big businesses in London’s ‘Square Mile’ including the Bank of England and the Barbican Centre – so your workplace could even be signed up too.
Recycle electrical clutter
West London Waste is a super active community group with loads of opportunities to make a difference and get involved. The group is currently encouraging people to can de-clutter their homes and get rid of those old, broken electrical items without sending them off to landfill. Instead, they can be dropped off at any West London library. The group also offers repair workshops where residents can get their broken electrical items repaired instead of throwing them away.
Help a new campaign get started
An exciting, brand new campaign has just cropped up in East Finchley and it’s the perfect time to get involved. The campaign group No2 Plastics has been going since January 2019 and aims to rid East Finchley of single-use plastics. You can get involved by helping the group to grow and encouraging residents and local businesses to reduce, reuse and recycle.
