We scoured Instagram for three inspirational vans and chatted to the owners about why they chose van life

Lucy, a particularly glam van conversion, is home to Frank Gullen, 38, and Juliet Thompson, 35, as well as their two dogs, Arnie and Wolly. Exploring their native Australia from a converted Renault Master, the couple left nothing out when fitting out their home on wheels.
While beautifully decorated with sparkly lights, patterned fabrics and bright pops of colour, Lucy’s interior is also highly functional. They have incorporated a working kitchen, built in toilet and even a hidden shower.
Of this lifestyle, Juliet said, “We both felt the urge to be off the grid.” For the couple, the aim of van life is now to be “sustainable, free from constraints, open to change, to alternate ways of thinking.”

Chris Johnson, 31, is originally from Birmingham and works as a software analyst, barman and bicycle courier from his home on wheels. He has kitted out his van with reclaimed wood, contemporary tribal fabrics and cosy string lights which together make every corner of the space unique.
For Chris, living from his van is all about independence. Having spent time in the city, this van is an escape from the hustle and bustle which allows Chris to live a much simpler life. He says, “It’s about freedom and choosing life on my terms.”

Deena Currie, 40, has brought a host of personal touches to her van’s interior. Crochet bunting and a collection of prized photos make this small space homely and a simple design means her only focus from the van is the view. Named Gordy after her late grandfather, Deena’s van is a place of calm.
A self-professed weekend warrior who uses this beautiful van to explore the wilderness, Deena spent 3 weeks touring Tasmania with her husband last year. For Deena it is all about relaxation. She adds, “I love the freedom of being able to pull up, lift the back and lay in bed with a great view.”
