Check your tyre pressure
In your owners manual or in your van’s doors it will tell you the ideal tyre pressure for your vehicle. Using a tyre pressure gauge, check the pressure of each tyre several times to get an average and top them up or reduce them accordingly. (Make sure you check before you have driven too far. Otherwise the tyres will heat up and the tyre pressure will increase!)
Check your air filter
Make sure it’s new and in good condition. You can quite easily take it out from under the hood and clean it. When it’s dirty the car motor will have to work much harder and therefore use more fuel.
Try to keep your van as streamlined as possible
Adding things on the outside can vastly change your vehicles aerodynamics. If you absolutely have to store anything on the outside of your vehicle, put it at the back.
Keep your van light
For every 100 pounds added in weight you are losing about 1–2% efficiency. Not only will it save on fuel but it will make the space inside your van less cluttered and easier to use.
Leave it on
If you aren’t going to stay somewhere longer than a minute or so, just leave your van on. Starting up your vehicle uses a lot of fuel, keep it on and save a little money.
When to lower your windows or switch on the air conditioning
If you are driving at under 45mph, lower the windows. If you are going over 45mph the drag created from lowering your windows is less efficient than switching on the air conditioning.
Don’t keep speeding up and slowing down
Maintaining a constant speed saves petrol
