Become part of the Ecobricks movement by turning your plastic rubbish into bricks
Even when we try to cut down on plastic use, it’s hard to completely stop using it. In supermarkets most of the produce you can buy will come in plastic packets, and a lot of that can’t even be recycled.
Ecobricks are an inventive solution to put this plastic to good use. Simply cut up bits of plastic that cannot be recycled, stuff them into a used plastic water bottle and use them to build.

Ecobricks in Ireland
In Co Wexford, Ireland, a seal rescue centre has been using
Executive director Melanie Croce told The Irish Sun: “Ecobricks are interesting because they serve a dual purpose. You can use it as a building material and stop it from going out into the environment.
“We’re the only sea rehab facility in the Republic of Ireland, and we’re in a position here of being able to see directly how plastic impacts on wild animals.
“So by using eco bricks we’re making that connection, so it’s very visible for people.”

Zero-waste global solutions
The Global Ecobrick Alliance provide resource packs and schemes to help get communities started on their ecobrick journeys.
Already entire buildings have been created using ecobricks in the Philippines and Guatemala, where the scheme has been especially popular.
The ecobricking movement encourages communities to get together to create their own local plans for what to do with the bricks they create.
Part of the purpose of ecobricks is to make individuals more aware of their plastic use. You can see exactly how much plastic waste you are creating over the period of time it takes to fill the bottle.
How to make an Ecobrick
- Get a used plastic bottle of any size and clean it out thoroughly.
- Any plastic you use can be cut up and stuffed into the bottle using a stick.
- Make sure the plastic you use is clean and dry. Once the bottle is full you can weigh it.
- If it weighs over 0.33g per millilitre, it’s ready to use!
