We found some of the snazziest eco-friendly gifts for Mother’s Day
Plastic-free presents can be hard to find, but zero-waste gifting is great for the environment and so rewarding. Here at canvas & glass we’ve compiled a list of our favourite plastic-free gifts for Mother’s Day this year, so whether your mum is beauty-savvy, active or adventurous, we’ve got the right environmentally conscious gift for her.
Woven bike basket
The Basket Room, £55
The Basket Room was set up by design students Camilla and Holly and is an ethical homeware company that provides weavers with fair wages and dignified working conditions. This plastic-free bike basket is fair trade and hand woven from veta vera grass in Northern Ghana and makes a great alternative to a plastic or canvas tote bag.
Zero-waste makeup
Fat and the Moon, £24
Plastic-free makeup products are notoriously hard to find, but herbal brand Fat and the Moon have got it covered. This plastic-free lip paint makes the perfect handbag friendly gift for any waste-conscious mum and contains only four ingredients: sunflower oil, beeswax, vitamin E and cosmetic grade mineral pigments. The packaging is a simple metal tin and the lip paint comes in different shades including a brick red, lavender, burnt orange and wine.
Natural body balm
Lyonsleaf, £14.99
This Lyonsleaf body balm is 100% natural and can be used as a cleanser and a moisturiser. The packaging is fully recyclable or reusable and the simplicity of the formula means it’s great for all skin types. It’s gentle enough for sensitive skin, suitable for acne sufferers and even works on problem skin conditions like dermatitis, eczema and psoriasis.
Send flowers
Grand Flowers Eastbourne, £35
Flowers are a Mother’s Day classic, but much of the packaging that traditional bouquets arrive in is single use and not suitable for recycling. To remedy this, many florists are now selling alternatives that look as good but don’t damage our environment. Grand Flowers Eastbourne for example, offers flowers that are packaged in biodegradable string, compostable cellophane and recyclable glass vases.
Silk scarf
Accessorize, £25
Many scarves you find in high street stores contain high quantities of polyester, which makes them damaging to the environment. These 100% silk alternatives from Accessorize are covered in bright botanical prints and can be worn as scarves, hair accessories or even be used to package gifts – a great all-rounder. Plus, if you’re interested in recycled gifts, Accessorize stock a range of scarves that are made from reused plastic. Check them out!
Beeswax wraps
The Beeswax Wrap Company, £10
If your Mum is a keen chef, baker or meal prepper, beeswax wraps make the perfect gift. Beeswax wraps are a natural alternative to clingfilm and the combination of simple ingredients with the organic cotton fabric allows the wraps to breathe and make sure food stays fresh for longer. These ones from the Beeswax Wrap Company are made by hand in Stroud using GOTS certified cotton, pine resin, organic jojoba oil and UK beeswax. They can be reused again and again – just wash them in cold soapy water and pop them in the oven every month or so to re-pasturise them.
Lavender soy candle
Etsy, £11
Nothing says relaxation more than a candle. This Lavender and Soy candle, available on Etsy, is vegan and plastic free and blended with pure lavender essential oil to create a relaxing scent. Packed on a dye free linen bag and delivered in hand shredded cardboard, this is the perfect Mother’s Day gift to send in the post.
