Cardiff Blues sign American rugby ace

Cardiff Arms ParkCardiff Blues have today announced the signing of Blaine Scully from Leicester Tigers.

The 27-year-old has played for the Tigers since he was given a four-month contract after impressing during trial in 2013.

Before that he played for JP Morgan’s 7s and impressed with his work rate and strong defensive work.

The US Eagles international has spent most of his career at fullback but can also play on the wing. His career has progressed rapidly after only taking up the sport at the University of California where he studied history.

He was always athletic though having played basketball, swimming, and water polo, water polo and swimming in high school.

After taking up the sport he became a standout player in the American college system, with achievements including becoming captain of the 2011 USA Rugby Collegiate All-Americans Touring Squad, and two national titles with the University of California. Scully also impressed in the sevens from of the game during his time as a student.

He led the college to a second-place finish at the 2010 Collegiate Rugby Championships tournament. Before joining Leicester Tigers he was already an international player, having been first called up by the Eagles in 2011 and playing world cup rugby in New Zealand the same year.

He has since scored 35 points in 21 caps at international level. Blues fans can look forward to watching a player, who became a fan favourite in Leicester and winning a player of the month award last year despite only recently taking up the sport.
