Hungry customers are prepared to brave the queue for free food
Queues have been forming around the block outside the three Magic Wrap shops today, as customers are treated to a free wrap.
The Magic Wrap, a family-run business in Cardiff, is giving out free regular-sized wraps in honour of the founder’s dying wish. All three shops on Senghennydd Road, Barrack Lane and Mermaid Quay will be giving them out from 10am to 5pm.
Peter Jones and his son Ed opened their first shop in 2008 with the intention to provide a healthy ‘on the go’ lunch made fresh every day.
Ed Jones said: “The idea of a free Magic Wrap day, was the original brainchild of our founder Peter Jones, to celebrate the opening of our new Cardiff Bay shop.
“Sadly, his time with us was cut short cruelly before its completion and with his passing, in tribute to his vision and determination, we have decided to roll out this ‘magic day’.”
The ‘random acts of kindness day’, celebrated in the UK today, was picked as the appropriate occasion to put a smile on people’s face and a free Magic Wrap in their hands.
The queues seem to be getting longer and longer
The three shops have prepared by increasing their supply of wraps and ingredient for what promises to be a very busy day.
Mr Jones told customers: “Should things get a bit hectic on the day, thank you for your patience, cooperation and understanding.”
Jessica Meredith, 26, who works at the Magic Wrap shop on Barrack Lane, said: “ We hope to at least double our production of wraps today. Usually there are three or four of us for the day, but there are six members of staff today.
“The idea is to get people to try a new wrap and maybe discover which one is there favourite.
“We interact with our customer through social media and it is great to have feed back that way as well.
“Of course I’m excited! An event like this requires everyone to put in hard work but the rewards at the end are worth it.”
By midday the Barrack Lane Magic Wrap had already run up totals of more than £650 and queues stretched down the street.
Queues at Cardiff University Student Union were even longer as students braved over hour long waiting times in order to get a free meal as the establishment ran up a bill of over £1,000, running out of wraps and giving away over 2,000 in the process.
Anthony, 22, a student who lives on Tewkesbury Street said: “I think it’s great – it means I don’t have to buy lunch today!”
When asked, staff told the Cardiffian they didn’t regret the decision to put on the special offer, but fear the queue will never die down.
