PENARTH Marina is one of two Vale of Glamorgan beaches to be granted the prestigious Blue Flag award this week.

The accolade, given by the Foundation for Environmental Education, marks out exceptional beaches and marinas around the world.

Penarth is only the third marina in Wales to be marked out as a Blue Flag site.

Karen Rogers, Education Co-ordinator at Penarth Pier, was delighted with the award.

She said it was a credit to the wardens who maintain the cleanliness of the beach.

The water on the seafront is murky, but this is due to high silt deposits in the Bristol Channel, rather than pollution.

Penarth’s Marina, one of the main tourist attractions for the town, has a selection of high-end restaurants, and the pier has a cinema and an art gallery.

It is hoped that the Blue Flag award will help to promote the town further as a tourist location.
